Qingdao – “The Sailing City”

Located on the coast between Beijing to the north and Shanghai to the south, Qingdao is the financial and foreign trade hub of Shandong province. As a former German colony, Qingdao boasts the Tsingtao Brewery, producing the Tsingtao brand of beer amongst a group of other widely recognized local companies such as Haier, Hisense, and Aucma. In further building on its past, Qingdao has in the recent decades maintained a steady flow of foreign trade by leveraging overseas organizations for economic cooperation and exchange, as well as other groups within foreign countries.  

Qingdao has strong R&D capabilities. China’s most well-known city for advances in science and technology, Qingdao has over 560 R&D institutions, 89 national key laboratories, 11 national enterprise technological centers and 24 universities. In addition, Qingdao also has 24 academics from the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

The city’s core technological industries range from information technology, biopharmaceuticals, new materials, new energy, advanced equipment manufacturing, marine technology to defense technology.
